Creative Entrepreneurs: Jose Sebastian Gomez

Over the past year, creative production company Shilo and director Jose Sebastian Gomez took on the challenge of creating a great deal of stunning cinematic content for Qatar TV, as you can see in the montage featured above. After traveling to Qatar to learn more about the culture and people – and make a lot of new friends – Shilo crafted this original HD content and much more for Qatar TV’s on-air identity.

“We were asked to make each promo a metaphor for different aspirational subjects such as education, business, environment and family,” Jose explains. “The main creative challenge was to render these stories in artistic and simple ways that didn’t require further explanation or language. We focused on conveying a feeling and tone for each subject in ways that are abstract and metaphorical but still understandable.”

Jose began his career in 1990 when he joined skateboard manufacturer Giant Distribution as an in-house designer. Quickly ascending to the position of CD, he spent the next few years building brands for Giant, before joining Atlanta-based urban marketing and design firm Urbanistics as partner and lead CD. After crafting countless breakthrough campaigns for music companies Arista, BMG, Sony and others, Jose fulfilled his boyhood dream in 1994 by moving out west and starting his own skateboard company, Rhythm. Overseeing all aspects of design and production, Jose built Rhythm into a major force in the international skate, snow and surf markets, eventually selling the company to global sports powerhouse K2 in 1997. Next, Jose began developing a new footwear brand called Adio, and once again, his artistic sensibility, product design and marketing leadership soon resulted in the company becoming a market leader, its brand earning acclaim for its fresh and sophisticated approach, and its global sales soaring past $55 million. Based on his successes, over the years, Jose developed strong opinions on storytelling, design and communications. In 2004 he launched Shilo as an independent creative production company. Today, Jose makes his home in Del Mar, California, where he continues passionately pursuing his interests in storytelling, filmmaking and design.
