On 11 July on ABC, The ESPYS Presented by Capital One once again featured the world’s premier athletes, the sports world’s biggest stars, and the very best sports stories of the past year. Hosted by Serena Williams, this 32nd annual celebration supporting ESPN’s ongoing commitment to The V Foundation for Cancer Research was televised live from LA’s Dolby Theatre.
Abbreviated for the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly, the ESPYS honor the outstanding achievements of athletes and teams from various sports disciplines during the past year, as chosen by fans. Much more than a prestigious sports awards ceremony, the event brings together top athletes, coaches, celebrities, and sports enthusiasts to honor excellence in sports – including some of the many major initiatives aimed at improving our world.
The MLK Day of Service is an opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Junior’s legacy through service and volunteerism.
Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’”

I freely admit to being a pretty big fan of Malcolm Gladwell. Still, like many people, his recent comments on The Diary Of A CEO podcast left me wondering exactly why he was trashing the idea of working from home. In the episode’s headline, he blames this phenomenon for “destroying” us. Within the in-depth conversation with host Steven Bartlett, the New York Times best-selling author overtly doubts our abilities to contribute to society, to fashion meaningful lives, and to engage professionally, from outside corporate offices.
Two months from today, our son will turn 18. Searching memory banks and analyzing recent conversations, I am recalling that unwelcome rise of daunting external pressures. As an adult, I understand that pressure makes it extra hard for most people to make good decisions … overall in life, and even in basic conduct.

The Children’s Playhouse was launched ten years ago by a group of local citizens in Boone, North Carolina, who wanted an enriching play environment for children from birth to age eight that at the same time offered parents and caregivers friendly support in the important job of raising children. Ann Kiefert, Kathy Parham, Cathy Riggs, Heidi Campbell and my wife Beth Darnell were all members of the founding board. Under Kathy’s leadership, The Playhouse has not only become a widely renowned creative play space for families, it has also become a very powerful force for community goodness.
This past weekend, The Playhouse held its fourth annual Great Friend to Families Awards reception. Launched by Kathy and her forward-looking board members in 2009, this event has honored dozens of Hometown Heroes for their sustained contributions to the well-being of young children and families in our area. Proceeds from this annual event help support The Playhouse and ensure the facility remains accessible to families who might not otherwise be able to use its services.
